History

Heritage

Antiquity

To understand the origin of Covas, we must go back centuries and give voice to the stories told by the elders of the place. It is said that the estate was once a place of retreat for elderly friars, sent from a convent in Ourense, owner of these lands. Here, the religious not only devoted themselves to prayer, but also administered the tithes from the neighboring farms and provided essential services to the community. Over time, Covas became a self-sufficient parish, housing fundamental structures such as the mill, the blacksmith's forge, the sawmill, the furnace and the chapel. This legacy is still alive in every corner of the estate, forming part of the essence and character of Covas.

In Covas, every corner tells a story. From the Casa Grande, with its centuries-old architecture, to the Roman bridge and the restored mills, the estate is a living testimony to the past. Surrounded by chestnut and oak forests, our spaces include a centuries-old orchard, a historic chapel, a traditional granary and trails leading to the Toldao River and its waterfalls.

Casa Grande de Covas is an old manor house with centuries of history, carefully restored to preserve its traditional essence. Its cultural legacy extends through multiple architectural elements of great value, such as:

  • A Roman bridge with Latin inscriptions that make it a historical jewel.
  • Archaeological remains from Roman times, witnesses of ancient settlements.
  • A traditional granary, a threshingfloor and a haystack, symbols of Galician rural life.
  • A set of cellar and antebodega, where wine was stored and elaborated.
  • A chapel more than three centuries old, a space of meditation and tradition.
